Thermal imaging cameras show what radar and the naked eye can’t. They detect heat signatures from people, animals, other vessels, pilings, and floating debris regardless of lighting conditions. For some boaters, a thermal camera is a luxury. For others, it’s an essential piece of safety equipment. Here’s how to decide whether it belongs on your boat.
How Marine Thermal Cameras Work
Thermal cameras detect infrared radiation emitted by objects based on their temperature. Warmer objects like engines, people, and running boats appear brighter on the display. Cooler objects like water, docks, and floating debris appear darker but are still clearly visible against the water surface.
The result is a real-time video image that works independently of visible light. Unlike a spotlight, a thermal camera doesn’t alert other vessels or blind your own crew’s night vision. It simply shows you what’s there.
Where Thermal Cameras Add Real Value
Night navigation: Running an inlet or navigating a crowded anchorage at night is safer with thermal imaging. You can see kayakers, swimmers, anchored boats without lights, and channel markers with contrast that radar can’t provide.
Fog and low visibility: Thermal cameras cut through fog in ways that the human eye can’t. Combined with radar, they give you two independent sources of target information in restricted visibility.
Man overboard: A person in the water shows up clearly on a thermal camera. In a MOB situation at night, thermal imaging can be the difference between a recovery and a search. This alone is the reason many offshore boats carry one.
Debris avoidance: Floating logs, containers, and other debris are difficult to spot visually at night but can show up on thermal imaging, especially if they’ve been heated by the sun during the day.
Who Should Consider One
Boats that regularly run at night, transit crowded harbors in low visibility, or fish offshore where MOB risk exists benefit the most from thermal cameras. Sportfish boats making pre-dawn runs out of Barnegat, Manasquan, or Cape May Inlet are good candidates. So are boats that fish overnight at the canyons or make deliveries up and down the coast.
For a boat that only runs in daylight in fair weather, a thermal camera may not be the best place to spend the budget. That money might be better invested in radar, sonar, or communication equipment.
Brands and Models
FLIR (now part of Teledyne) dominates the marine thermal camera market. Their M-series cameras offer pan-tilt-zoom capability, integration with Raymarine and Garmin displays, and image quality that’s steadily improved over the past few generations. Fixed-mount options like the FLIR M100/M200 are more affordable and suit boats that need basic thermal awareness without full gimbal control.
Prices range from around $2,500 for a fixed-mount entry-level camera to $15,000+ for a fully stabilized PTZ unit with radar integration. Installation involves mounting the camera, running power and video cables, and integrating the feed with your multifunction display or a dedicated monitor.
Installation
Camera placement needs to provide a clear forward view without obstruction from the T-top, radar scanner, or outriggers. Power draw is modest, but video cabling needs to be run carefully to avoid signal degradation.
