Electronics problems on a boat are frustrating because they usually show up at the worst possible time. The chartplotter freezes mid-run. The radar stops painting targets. The sonar drops bottom at speed. The VHF goes dead. These issues are common, and most of them trace back to a few recurring causes.
At Chart House Marine Electronics, we see these problems weekly. Here’s a field guide to the most frequent marine electronics issues and what to check before calling for service.
Chartplotter Freezing or Rebooting
Random freezes and reboots are usually caused by power supply issues. Low voltage from a weak battery, voltage spikes from engine starting, or a corroded power connection can all cause the display to shut down or lock up. Check the voltage at the display’s power input with a multimeter. It should be a steady 12 to 14 volts. If it dips below 10.5 volts during engine cranking, the display may need a dedicated, isolated power feed.
Software bugs are the other common cause. Make sure the unit is running the latest firmware. Manufacturers release updates that address stability issues, and skipping them can leave known bugs in place.
Radar Not Displaying Targets
If the radar powers on but shows a blank or noisy screen, the issue is usually in the scanner, the cable, or the display settings. Check the cable connection at both ends. Corroded pins or a loose connector can cause intermittent signal loss. If the connection is solid, the scanner itself may have a bearing, motor, or electronics failure that requires service.
A radar that shows excessive clutter or sea return usually needs gain and sea clutter adjustments. Auto mode doesn’t always handle New Jersey’s ocean conditions well, especially in confused seas near inlets. Manual tuning often solves the problem.
Sonar Losing Bottom at Speed
This is almost always a transducer issue. Aeration around the transducer face at higher speeds disrupts the sonar beam and causes the unit to lose bottom tracking. Transom-mount transducers are the most susceptible, especially on boats that run at high trim angles.
Check the transducer for proper placement, correct angle, and clean face. If the mounting location is in turbulent water, the transducer may need to be relocated to a calmer section of the hull.
VHF Radio with Poor Range
A VHF that used to reach 15 miles and now struggles at 5 has an antenna problem. The antenna itself, the coax cable, or the connector at either end is degraded. Saltwater corrodes PL-259 and N-type connectors quickly, and a corroded connection causes significant signal loss.
Test the antenna system with an SWR meter. Readings above 2:1 indicate a problem. Replace corroded connectors, inspect the coax for damage, and check the antenna mount for integrity. If the antenna is more than five years old, replacement is often the simplest fix.
NMEA 2000 Devices Dropping Off
Devices that appear and disappear on the network usually point to a power or termination issue. Check backbone voltage with a network analyzer or multimeter. It should be a steady 12V. Missing terminators at either end of the backbone cause data errors and dropped devices. Corroded T-connectors or water-damaged drop cables are also common culprits.
