A VHF radio is the most important piece of safety equipment on any boat. It’s your primary link to the Coast Guard, other vessels, bridge tenders, and marinas. When the cell phone loses signal three miles offshore, the VHF is what keeps you connected. But not all radios perform equally, and the antenna makes as much difference as the radio itself.
Fixed-Mount vs. Handheld
Every boat should have a fixed-mount VHF radio. Handhelds are useful as backups and for dinghy use, but they lack the power, antenna connection, and DSC capability of a proper fixed-mount unit. A fixed-mount radio transmits at 25 watts with a full-size antenna, giving you 15 to 25 miles of range depending on conditions. A handheld puts out 5 to 6 watts and typically reaches 3 to 5 miles.
DSC and GPS Integration
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is a built-in feature on modern VHF radios that allows one-button distress calling. When activated, it broadcasts your GPS position, vessel identification, and nature of distress to the Coast Guard and all DSC-equipped vessels in range. For this to work, the radio needs a GPS source. Many current radios have built-in GPS receivers, and those that don’t can pull position data from the boat’s NMEA 2000 network.
Every VHF radio at Chart House is installed with a working GPS connection and a programmed MMSI number. Without both, the DSC function won’t work in an emergency.
AIS-Capable Radios
Several VHF radios now include AIS receive capability, showing nearby vessel traffic directly on the radio’s screen. Garmin, Standard Horizon, and Icom all offer models with built-in AIS receivers. For boats that don’t have a separate AIS system, this is a practical way to add vessel tracking without additional equipment.
For full AIS functionality, including transmitting your own position, a standalone AIS transponder is still necessary. But the AIS-equipped VHF radios are a strong upgrade over basic units, especially in high-traffic areas like Sandy Hook, Barnegat Bay, and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Antenna Selection
The antenna determines your VHF range more than any other factor. A longer antenna provides more gain, which extends range. For center consoles and sportfish boats, an 8-foot antenna with 6dB gain mounted on the T-top or hardtop is standard. This provides excellent range for both inshore and offshore communication.
For boats with limited mounting height or sailboats with masthead antennas, a 3-foot antenna with 3dB gain works well. The lower gain provides a wider signal pattern, which is better for boats that heel or roll significantly.
Antenna cable quality matters. RG-8X or LMR-240 coaxial cable with properly installed PL-259 or N-type connectors minimizes signal loss between the radio and the antenna. Every foot of cable and every connector adds loss, so the run should be as short and clean as possible.
Installation
Mounting the radio at the helm in a visible, accessible location is straightforward. The antenna mount, cable routing, and connector work are where the quality of the installation shows. We use marine-grade mounting hardware, weather-sealed connectors, and properly supported cable runs.
